Academy Students & Faculty Unveil Innovations at Comic-Con

This past weekend at Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego, Academy Illustration students revealed Figments, a digital comic produced with industry-leading publishing software. Developed via a partnership between the university and Tall Chair, makers of software for creating digital books for mobile devices, the comic puts Academy students among technology leaders in the comics world.

New Alum Kim VanBrenk, on Designing Independently with August Press

While most Academy students were scrambling to finish final projects before graduation 2012, School of Graphic Design online grad-to-be Kim VanBrenk was already helming her own design business, and looking to expand. VanBrenk (BFA 2012) operates August Press, her design studio specializing in finely composed wedding correspondence that retains the delicate feel of handmade craft.

Grads & Honorees Recognized at 2012 Commencement Ceremonies

Commencement ceremonies were held by the Academy of Art University May 24 and 25 this year to recognize 2200 graduates — 900 master’s degree recipients and 1300 bachelor’s — at San Francisco’s Cow Palace. In addition to recognition for graduates, five distinguished figures were awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees, presented by university President Dr. Elisa Stephens.

NASA/Academy Project Stays in the Media Spotlight

For the past semester, students from the Academy of Art University have been working with NASA engineers to design a user interface for an advanced planetary rover. Senior Zach Babitt Is First Academy Student-Athlete to be Drafted by MLB

Academy of Art University Athletics celebrated a milestone June 5 when senior Zach Babitt, an infielder on the men’s baseball squad, was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Babitt caught the eye of the Dodgers after just two seasons with the Urban Knights.
