Urban Forest Project: Academy of Art University Hosts San Francisco Reception
Friday, January 22nd, 2010On Saturday, Jan. 23, AIGA San Francisco hosts a reception to preview the city’s Urban Forest Project, an effort jointly sponsored by AIGA SF, the design firm Worldstudio and the Academy of Art University. The Urban Forest Project will bring a forest of thought-provoking banners to city streets to promote messages of sustainability.
Scheduled from 2–4 p.m. at the Bayview Opera House (4705 Third St., San Francisco), the reception provides a glimpse of how the Urban Forest Project will transform city streets to encourage citizens to pause and reflect on the critical role of nature in the urban landscape. (See previous Newsfeed coverage of the project here.)
As part of the project’s creation, AIGA SF enlisted teams of professional designers to mentor high school students via a number of community nonprofits, including the Bay Area Video Coalition, SF Camerwork: First Exposures, San Francisco Youth Commission, Southern Exposure, and Young Artists at Work/Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Work produced by the students and their mentors will be shown for the first time at the reception. Also previewed will be artworks for the project from Academy of Art University students and alumni. San Francisco Environment Department staff will be on hand with information about a wealth of topics such as how to recycle and compost using the city’s home collection program.
